Anil Kapoor (born 24 December 1959, Mumbai, India) is an Indian Bollywood actor and producer.Standing 5, he is a well established actor in the bollywood industry and is seen as a versatile and a hard working actor, who touched his peak, during the late 1980s

Anil has many film industry connections. His father, Surinder Kapoor, is a film producer. His elder brother, Boney Kapoor, is a successful producer whose banner is Narsimha Films. His younger brother Sanjay Kapoor is also a well known Bollywood actor though not as successful . He is the brother-in-law of the actress Sridevi with whom he has starred in many films. His sister Reena is married to Sandeep Marwah of the famous Marwah Films & Video Studios in Noida Film City. Anil's daughter, Sonam Kapoor, is starring in a film with Rishi Kapoor's son, Ranbir Kapoor.

Anil grew up in Chembur, Mumbai and went to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School.
He was the second child of his parents. He was a shy but happy go lucky kid during his childhood. His father, Surinder Kapoor was then the secretary to Shammi Kapoor and subsequently started producing films. His mother, Nirmal (Suchitra) was a house wife. His childhood was quite ordinary and spent in a Mumbai chawl at Tilak Nagar - Chembur. But he was always a bit of a dreamer and would play around all day bare-foot collecting empty cigarette packets and "Gold Spot" bottle caps, never coming home before night.

At the age of Seven,he got his first break. He played the young Shashi Kapoor in a film called "Tu Payal Main Geet". Bur unluckily, the film was never released, but right from then, he realised that this is what he wanted to do for the rest of my life.

During Ganesh Chaturthi, makeshift screens down the streets of Anil's residence would play 16mm prints of films like "Kohinoor" starring Dilip Kumar & Meena Kumari and "Insaan Jaag Utha" with Sunil Dutt & Madhubala. Anil watched these films and wanted to be an actor one day.The movie that really inspired him was Raj Kapoor's "Awara".He didn't want to become a Doctor or an Engineer like other chidren of his age.All he wanted was to be an actor like Raj Kapoor.

He joined the prestigious St.Xaviers College after school. There he made friends with Mazhar Khan, a fellow actor and a fellow dreamer. They started participating dramatics every year and soon he won the Best Actor Trophy at an inter-collegiate competition which fanned his ambition further. Interestingly enough, Shashi Kapoor was the chief guest at this function and he was the first professional actor to encourage Anil Kapoor. In the second year of college, Anil was expelled due to non attendance.

At this stage of life Anil decided to chase his dream seriously. He first tried to seek admission in the Pune Film Institute but failed in the written test. So was his friend Mazhar Khan. Then he enrolled in Roshan Taneja's acting classes. He did not bunk a single day. He would change 3 buses to reach the class and get home late at night absolutely tired but completely satisfied with the shape his life was taking.

To hone his talent further as an actor,he learnt singing and dancing. He read several biographies of luminaries like SOPHIA LOREN and LAURENCE OLIVIER. He worked as a assistant producer and casting director with his brother Boney in "Hum Paanch" and other home productions.

Anil made his Bollywood debut in the 1979 film "Hamare Tumhare" where he played a supporting role.M.S.Sathyu offered him "Kahan Kahan Se Guzar Gaya" an offbeat but sensible film .After completing the film in Calcutta, Sawan Kumar Tak signed him for "Laila" opposite Poonam Dhillon.

But his big break cane with the 1983 Hindi film "Woh Saat Din". His brother Boney launched him in "Woh Saat Din" opposite Padmini Kolhapure, which took the film industry by surprise. The movie was not only critically acclaimed, it also garnered commercial success.Anil's performance as the lovelorn singer / music director was appreciated. He then appeared in a Telugu film "Vamsa Vriksham" and played a lead role in director Mani Ratnam's debut Kannada film "Pallavi Anu Pallavi".

Then came "Mashaal". A huge film directed by Yash Chopra, costarring Dilip Kumar - a childhood dream. Anil Kapoor won his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for Mashaal. At the premiere of Mashaal Subhash Ghai congratulated Anil and signed him for "Meri Jung" and "Karma".It was the turning point in Anil Kapoor's life .Both the films "Meri Jung" (1985) and "Karma" (1986) proved to be major box office hits and established him as a star.

In 1987, he starred in "Mr. India" which was one of his biggest box office hits and shot him to superstar status.

In 1988 he starred in the hit film "Tezaab" and was rewarded with another Filmfare Best Actor Award. The following year he had two more hit films, "Ram Lakhan" and "Parinda". In 1991 he won critical praise for his performance as a middle aged man in the film "Lamhe" which was a box office failure but was a success overseas. In 1992, Anil starred in "Beta", for which he won a second Filmfare Best Actor Award award.

After a period of little box office success for the next few years, in 1997 he had three box office successes which were "Judaai", "Virasat" and "Deewana Mastana".In 1999 once again he had three consecutive box office hits, "Biwi No.1", "Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain" and "Taal".He won a National Best Actor Award for his role in the 2000 film "Pukar".

After another long period of box office flops between the years 2001 to 2004, he had his long-awaited hit with "No Entry" in 2005 which was one of the highest grossing films of the year.

Anil recently turned producer of the film "Gandhi, My Father" which focuses on the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi. The film released on August 3, 2007.

He has been known to stand by Shilpa Shetty through the allegations that her family has link with the Indian mafia.

Although successful as an actor mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, Anil has had a bad stint as a producer, when his latest film, "Gandhi my Father", though heavily appreciated by critics, failing to do well the box office. His earlier film as both producer and star "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" produced by the Kapoor family was also a huge disaster at the box office. Anil has been unlucky as a producer.

He married Sunita Kapoor in 1984; the couple have two daughters and a son. Both of them first `met' on the telephone. Anil got her number from a common friend .After talking with eachother over phone for a couple of months , they decided to meet. And Anil fell in love with her at first sight. Sunita was a top model, living in a posh apartment whereas Anil was just a struggler with an attitude and big dreams at that time.Inspite of all differences they fell in love with each other.Their relationship deepened and matured for over 5 years.

When Anil got "Mashaal" and "Meri Jung" he proposed to Sunita and they got married on the 19th of May 1984, in a very private ceremony attended only by his family and close friends.Sunita Kapoor was a leading print model when Anil married her.Sunita is a well known Jewellery Designer and was the first woman to launch a fitness club, IDEA that turned into runaway success. Despite her hectic schedule and multiple interest, Sunita's priority remains her home, husband and children. She is completely involved in Anil's work and is an active participant in all my projects.Anil Kapoor's best friend is his wife Sunita.
