VINOD KHANNA.........

He might have started his career as a deadly villain but because of his drop-dead good looks, producers soon started chasing him to be the hero. The girls would be found queuing behind him for his one smile and look at dimpled face. Vinod Khanna was the most loved star of his time.

Vinod Khanna started his career as a villian in Sunil Dutt's 'Man Ka Meet' (1969). Sunil Dutt's brother Som Dutt was the hero but the man who got all the notice was the villain. And what a wonderful villain he turned out to be. For sometime he kept doing villainous roles as in 'Sacha Jhootha' and 'Aan Milo Sajna'.

Gradually, with films like 'Mere Apne' (1972) and 'Achanak' (1973) he had become an actor to reckon with. But things changed in his favour and he found himself doing more of positive roles. He also got an opportunity to do films like 'Parvarish', 'Muqadar Ka Sikander', 'Hera Pheri', 'Amar Akbar Anthony' and 'Khoon Pasina' with Amitabh Bachchan.

Then there came some of his solo movies like 'Imtihaan', 'Aap Ki Khatir' and 'Lahoo Ke Do Rang'. His co-stars mostly were Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Tanuja, Rakhee and Yogita Bali. Just when everything was looking plum for him, he decided to retire and found solace in Osho Rajneesh.

But soon he was back and came up with hits like 'Insaaf' and 'Jurm'. This time he worked with the likes of Anita Raj, Meenakshi Sheshadari and Sangeeta Bijlani. He launched his son Akshaye Khanna in a film called 'Himalayputra'.

Negative roles could not contain satisfy his talent for long. Vinod Khanna’s skills and charismatic personality soon fetched him the roles of a hero.

His sensitive performance as an army officer facing death row in another Gulzar scripted and directed 1973 film "Achanak" was critically acclaimed. The songless film echoed the true life story of K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra and Khanna portrayed Kawas Nanavati, the real life Navy officer.

The rise of Vinod Khanna in the filmdom went on steadily through the seventies. But when he was soaring high in his profession, Vinod Khanna developed spiritual inclinations.During his spiritual quest, his coming into contact with Osho the divine master abruptly interrupted his celluloid romance. He renounced the world and went to stay in the Osho’s ashram and left the film industry in 1979 for eight years. At this time, he was the most successful actor in the Bollywood, competing with Amitabh Bachchan.
There he did all kinds of jobs from fitter, electrician, and gardener to manual labourer to eke out a living. He stayed in the Oregon headquarters of the Osho’s commune for a couple of years. After a few years, he came back from Rajneeshpuram (US)—disillusioned and distressed, to pick up the lost threads of his profession.

He rejoined the industry, eight years later in mid 1980s.His come back film "Insaaf" was a runaway success and he was flooded with offers from people like JP Dutta, Yash Chopra and Mukul Anand. Soon he churned out a large number of films like "Batwara", "Kshatriya", "Suryaa", "C.I.D.","Rihaee","Pathar Ke Insaan","Parampara","Mahasangram", "Khoon Ka Karz","Dayavan", and "Police Aur Mujrim" and many others. The star-factor helped him oust five time Lok Sabha member Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder. Bhinder's perceived inability to develop the area outweighed the "outsider" tag applied to Khanna. The latter became union minister for culture and tourism in July 2002. Six months later he was moved to the more important ministry of external affairs (MEA) as minister of state. In 2004 he won re-election from Gurdaspur.
