He made his debut as a leading man in the 1995 film "Barsaat", and also won the Filmfare Best Debut Award for the film but the film flopped.
His was scheduled to be Bollywood's most well designed launch ever. Papa Dharmendra and big brother Sunny did everything they could to ensure that Bobby Deol announced his arrival in style. Several girls were screen-tested to play the lead opposite this stunning star son, before Twinkle Khanna , became the chosen one.
None other than Shekhar Kapur was assigned the task of making the young Deol's entry into films a memorable one. But long before the film could be completed, Kapur walked out of the project and Rajkumar Santoshi took over. Finally, when 'Barsaat' (earlier titled 'Badal') hit the screen in 1995, it couldn't ensure a rousing welcome at the ticket window.Although the film proved to be an average grosser, Bobby's dreamy eyes, stylish curls and cute dimples turned on the magic. And overnight, this star-son became hot property.

In 1997 Bobby Deol starred in his next film with Kajol, titled "Gupt" which went on to become the fifth highest grossing film of the year.

He continued to star in a few flop movies until 1998 when he had his second hit with "Soldier". His rather impressive performance as Birju (a small hill town boy who decides to rough it out in the outer world on his own after constant lamentations from his father, and later by his new found love interest) in "Kareeb" took a hit and went unnoticed against the action-packed "Soldier" in the same year.

In 2000 he had two average hit films "Badal" and "Bichhoo".
After a few more box office failures, "Ajnabee" (2001) and "Humraaz" (2002), both in the suspense thriller genre did moderately at the box office.
He was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the film "Humraaz" .

His movies with elder brother, Sunny Deol, "Dillagi" (1999) and "23rd March 1931: Shaheed" (2002) did not do well at the box office, but have gained the two some critical acclaim for their on-screen chemistry.
