TANUJA...........

Tanuja was born in Bombay on 23 September 1943.

Tanuja started her career as a child artist in the movie Hamari Beti (1950). And her career as an actress started with the movie chhabili(1960), at the age of 17 years. She is one of those actresses who doesn’t stop her career in bollywood. The turning point of her career was the movies like bhoot bungla(1965), jeene ki raah(1969),Paisa yaa Pyaar(1969), haati mere saathi(1971) . Her performances in the movies like Rules: Pyar ka superhit Formula(2003) Khaki (2004), are still appreciated. She got the hits like Bhoot Bungla, Jeene Ki raah, Paisa ya Pyaar, Haathi mere Saathi, etc. and still working and giving her best performances, but still she is not recognised as a superstar. Her last movie was Deewar(2004).after that she didn’t work in any other movie. In 1995, she played a small role in the movie Kalyug ke Avtaar as a computer operator.

Tanuja’s both the daughters, Kajol & Tanisha are actresses in Bolywood. Tanuja’s eldest daughter, kajol married with the actor Ajay Devgan. Tanuja is the sister of actress Nutan. She got married in 1973 with Mr. Shomu Mukherjee, who passed away in April, 2008

Actress Tanuja who was a popular name in the yesteryears and obviously known for being the mother of the ravishing Kajol is all set to make a comeback on the small screen. She will be seen playing the role of a Ghost in the serial ‘Babbanbhai Vs Bimlatai’. When asked about it, Tanuja said that she had been getting offers on TV but then all of them were more on the Saas-Bahu lines which were not appealing to her. She found this subject interesting and that too with a message to the audience. Hence she grabbed the offer. She will soon be seen in the 9X entertainment channel in her new role.



Tanishaa Mukherjee, the beautiful daughter of yesteryears actress Tanuja who knows how to kill hearts with her gorgeous smile became the envy of all girls on the sets of her upcoming film ‘One, Two, Three’. Incidentally, the Bengali beauty was draped in a bright yellow baby doll outfit which sent the onlookers for a round of jealousy and obviously the male members open mouthed. Her impact was so high that daughter of director Ashwini Dheer insisted that her papa buys her the same outfit.

Personal life

Tanuja was born in Bombay into a family of four children as Tanuja Samarth to poet Kumarsen Samarth and his wife Shobhna Samarth. Her mother was a famous 1930s and 1940s actress and her father was a poet and film director. When she was very young her parents separated. Tanuja entered films as a child actress and continued working until 1973. She met director Shomu Mukherjee on the set of Ek Baar Muskara Do(1972). A whirlwind romance ended in a 1973 marriage. They had two children: Kajol Mukherjee (b. 1974) and Tanisha Mukherjee (b. 1978). They were later separated.

She started her film career with her older sister Nutan in the film Hamari Beti (1950) as Baby Tanuja. She debuted as an adult actress in the film Chhabili (1960) which was directed by her mother. Her other films included Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi. Her film career ran through the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

After the success of Haathi Mere Saathi (1971), she acted in Mere jeevan Saathi, Do Chor and Ek Baar Muskara Do (1972). Some of the other films she has acted in are Pavitra Paapi, Bhoot Bangla, Anubhav, Jeene Ki Raah, etc.

Afterwards, Tanuja retired from films for a number of years, but came back when her marriage ended. She was now offered supporting roles often starring former heroes. Her Pyar Ki Kahani hero Amitabh Bachchan had to call her bhabhi (sister-in-law) in Khuddar (1982). She also played a supporting role in Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog (1982). She has recently appeared in such films as Saathiya (2002), Rules (2003), and Khakee (2003) as a supporting actress.

During the mid 60’s Tanuja started a parallel career in Bengali movies in Kolkata starting with the film Deya Neya (1963) where she was paired opposite the stalwart of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar. She followed it up with many other memorable hit films like Anthony-Firingee (1967) and Rajkumari (1970). Tanuja had fantastic on-screen chemistry with the then superstar Soumitra Chatterjee with whom she made some huge box office hits like Teen Bhuvaner Parey (1969), Prothom Kadam Phool etc.



This tomboyish daughter of Shobhana Samarth and sister of Nutan, Tanuja started with small roles and slowly graduated into a full-fledged heroine of 60s and 70s. She had no inhibitions in playing small roles with lots of substance. She did not have inhibitions in playing character roles. She indeed was a true actress.

Some of Tanuja's initial films were Raj Kapoor's 'Sapno Ka Saudagar', 'Jewel Thief' and the likes. But her sizzling song 'Raat Akeli Hai...' Stole many hearts and helped her in establishing a career of her own. She continued doing films like 'Jeene Ki Raah', 'Jeeyo Aur Jeene Do', 'Do Chor', 'Mom Ki Gudiya', 'Mere Jeevan Saathi', 'Humshakal', 'Imtihaan' and 'Haathi Mera Saathi'. Her co-stars mostly were Dev Anand, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna and Rajesh Khanna. She took to character roles as fish takes to water and did films after films as a character actress.
