Madhuri Dixit Biography

Madhuri Dixit (born as Madhuri Shankar Dixit to a Marathi family on May 15, 1967) is a five-time Filmfare Awards winning Indian Bollywood actress. She is a native of Mumbai, India. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, she dominated Hindi cinema as a leading actress, appearing in many hit films. She is considered to be an icon of the Bollywood film industry.

Madhuri, born to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, married an Indian-American, UCLA trained cardiovascular surgeon who practices in Denver, Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene, in 1999, also from a Marathi Koknastha Brahmin family. She has two sons, Arin (born in March 2003 in Colorado) and Ryan (born on March 8, 2005 in Colorado).She has two elder sisters, Rupa and Bharati, and an elder brother, Ajit. Madhuri now lives with Dr. Nene and her two children in Denver, Colorado, USA.

Dixit attended Parle College and wanted to be a micro-biologist.She is trained as a Kathak dancer, in the Indian classical tradition. She made her acting debut in "Abodh" (1984). After a few minor and supporting roles her first major role was in "Tezaab" (1988) which launched her career.



She then went on to star in the hit films "Dayavan" (1988), "Ram Lakhan" (1989), "Dil" (1990), "Saajan" (1991), "Beta" (1992), "Khalnayak" (1993), and the Bollywood blockbuster "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun". (1994).

After three years of little success, she appeared as Pooja in the successful "Dil To Pagal Hai" (1997) for which she won her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award.She is considered to be the most popular and powerful actress ever in Bollywood, known for her beauty, acting talents, and dancing skills.

Her dance sequence in the many songs, such as, Ek Do Teen (Film Tezaab), Bada Dukh Dina (Film Ram Lakhan), Dhak Dhak (Film Beta), Chane Ke Kheth Mein (Film Anjaam), Choli Ke Peechche (Film Khalnayak), Akhiyan Milau (Film Raja), Piya Ghar Aya (Film Yaarana), Key Sera (Film Pukar), Mardala (Film Devdas) etc., received critical acclaim.
Her dancing skills, facial grimaces and expressive eyes in the songs has haunted the hearts of millions of viewers ever since.In 2001, Dixit was awarded the National Citizens Award to recognize various activities that effect everyday life.

In 2002, she starred in "Devdas", with actor Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Madhuri Dixit was applauded for her acting in the film. The film attracted worldwide attention and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.



Since then she has not appeared in any films.On February 25, 2006 she performed on stage for the first time in six years at the Filmfare Awards to music from her last movie "Devdas". Her performance was choreographed by Saroj Khan and was very well received.

Madhuri Dixit has been the muse for the famous Indian painter M.F. Hussain who considers her the epitome of the Indian woman. She also appeared in his film "Gaja Gamini"(2000). "Gaja Gamini" was intended as a tribute to Dixit's talent and beauty.

On December 7, 2006, Dixit returned to Mumbai along with her husband and sons in order to start to film her new movie titled "Aaja Nachle", to be produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Anil Mehta.

A couple of insignificant movies like 'Abodh' and 'Swati ' and critics wrote off this diva without a flitch. More movies of the like came with 'Uttar Dakshin', 'Wardi' and 'Khatro Ke Khiladi' but it was with 'Tezaab' and 'Ram Lakhan', that the country sat up and took notice of this young woman who was going to change the course of things to come on Indian Cinema.



None other than Madhuri Dixit, she went on to become the Nation's favorite with some of the biggest hits of the 90's. Together with Anil Kapoor, she gave some of her most memorable performances with 'Parinda', 'Jeevan Ek Sangarsh', 'Jamai Raja', 'Beta' and 'Zindagi Ek Jua'. Equally popular with her other costars, Madhuri has survived in the industry and has had the opportunity to romance not just Vinod Khanna in Dayavan' but even his son (Akshaye Khanna) when he came of age with "Mohabbat'.

A couple of bloopers came along the way with "Anjaam', Prem Granth and "Rajkumar'. But taking it all in her stride she went on give further hits with 'Dil', 'Raja' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun' and 'Dil To Pagal Hai'.

Then came the highly acclaimed Devdas in 2002, where she created magic with her timeless role of Chandramukhi, the prostitute who falls in love with Devdas (Shahrukh Khan).

Married and settled abroad with two children today, Madhuri's forthcoming movies include Somnath Sen's untitled venture and Engineer.

A superb performance followed in Dil (1990) - which brought Madhuri her first Filmfare award, a rapport was struck with Indra Kumar which resulted in two more blockbusters Beta (1991) and Raja (1995). 1990 onwards, a hit film per year followed including Saajan, Khalnayak, Prem Pratigaya, cumulating in Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), hindi cinema's biggest blockbuster to date. Madhuri mania ensured the success of Raja (1995), a film with many flaws, thus Madhuri was renamed as female Amitabh Bachchan.

Married to "Sriram Nene" on 17 October, 1999. She didn't quit films after marriage. She gave us a splendid performance in Pukar. Now she is blessed with a baby boy. Then after a short gap, she came back in Lajja with a super performance which bagged her the Best Supporting Actor award in the Lux Zee Cine Awards 2002.

She was also awarded the "National Citizen's Award" on August 25, 2001 in Delhi. Tbe award recognizes excellence in various activities affecting national life.

She has regained some ground by winning the Fimfare best actress award in 1998 for her performance in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).

Born in a Marathi-speaking Koknastha Hindu Brahmin family consisting of dad, Shankar, mom, Snehlata, sisters, Rupa and Bharati, and brother, Ajit.

An acclaimed Kathak dancer, acting was not her goal, for she wanted to be a Micro-biologist, and did study in that course in Bombay's Parle College, in Vile Parle (East), Bombay.

She first appeared on Bollywood's tinsel screen in 1986 with two releases 'Abodh' and 'Swati', and from then continued to act in approximately 66 movies, as well has lent her voice as a playback singer in 'Devdas' and 'Wajood'. She has won approximately 12 awards from Filmare, Star Screen and Zee for her performances in 'Dil', 'Beta', 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun', 'Dil To Pagal Hai', 'Devdas', 'Raja', 'Mrityudand', and 'Lajja'.



In 1999 she got married to Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene, a Cardiovascular Surgeon, belonging to the same Caste as the Dixit family, and relocated to Denver, Colorado, U.S.A., where she subsequently gave birth to two sons, Arin and Ryan in March, 2003 and March 8, 2005 respectively.

Since December of 2006, the Nene family temporarily living in India as Madhuri is starring in 'Aaja Nachle' which is being directed by Anil Mehta, and produced by Yash Chopra.
